Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra (UC) is one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest in all of Portugal. Up until the early part of the 20th century, it was also the only Portuguese-speaking university in the world. Built in the grounds of a former palace, its 16th century campus is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Located in the historic city of Coimbra, the university is home to over 21,000 students, 10% of whom are international students, placing it among Portugal’s most international universities and lending the city a cosmopolitan feel.

UC is organised across three campuses and comprises eight faculties that offer a large and diverse academic portfolio. The university is particularly popular with technology and science students and the university is home to the largest science faculty in the country.

In keeping with its 700 year history, the university emphasises tradition alongside modernity and innovation.

Key features on campus include a theatre, sports facilities and stadiums, a publishing house, an astronomical observatory, a baroque library and an 18th century bell tower. The university also oversees a number of museums, including a science museum and a museum of sacred art.

The university lays claim to a number of unique traditions such as Queima das Fitas (Ribbon Burning), to celebrate the end of studies, and the tying of tin cans to the legs of new students to welcome them to the university.

Coimbra is regarded as a safe and friendly city to live in. Dating back to the Roman era, it is the fourth largest city in the country, situated on a riverfront, where medieval architecture sits alongside modern buildings.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. and M.B.B.S or M.D. degree and be highly motivated in teaching and learning, with demonstrated experience and excellence in the teaching of physiology discipline for medical, nursing, pharmacy, and biomedical sciences undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Applicants should also have strong communication and organizational skills, the ability to work independently and as a team, and be able to multi-task. Experience in teaching anatomy, biochemistry, or digital education in medicine is a plus. The position offered depends on level of expertise and years of teaching experience – at least 10 years for Senior Lecturer and 3 years for Lecturer. Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as Assistant Lecturer. The appointee will be responsible for teaching, conducting tutorials and demonstrations, supporting curriculum design, and developing teaching materials, etc. He/She will work closely with a team of colleagues dedicated to the development and delivery of innovative pedagogical approaches to improve student learning across several undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary for Senior Lecturer and Lecturer, and 10% of basic salary for Assistant Lecturer. We are now looking for a Lecturer or Teaching Fellow in Construction Work Based Learning and Apprenticeships. This is a specialist teaching-focused post, primarily centred on leading and delivering our apprenticeship work-based curriculum across Levels 4, 5 and 6 for both Quantity Surveying (QS) and Construction Management (CM) pathways. You will be the Module Leader for our work-based modules, these modules run alongside apprentices’ academic modules and are explicitly designed to help apprentices apply learning in the workplace, evidence Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs), and progress confidently towards gateway and End Point Assessment (EPA) / Apprenticeship Assessment (AA) readiness. The modules will support apprentices across the following standards delivered within our provision: Level 4: Construction Quantity Surveying Technician; Construction Site Supervisor Level 6: Chartered Surveyor (Quantity Surveying pathway); Construction Quantity Surveyor; Construction Site Manager Alongside your module leadership responsibilities, you will also hold a defined tripartite caseload as an Academic Liaison Tutor, supporting apprentices and employers through on-programme progress reviews (apprentice–employer–university) to monitor progress, agree actions, and ensure workplace activity aligns with module and programme requirements. Schemes of Service: Research Division: Food, Chemical and Biotechnology Employment Type: Fixed Term About the Project The opening is for a project funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The project supports Singapore’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. As a country with limited natural resources, Singapore is investing in innovative carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization technologies to reduce emissions and enhance energy security. This research aims to develop an integrated process for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy. The approach combines biotechnological and electrocatalytic processes to efficiently transform CO2 into useful chemicals, providing a novel and sustainable pathway for chemical manufacturing. The project is led by Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with research strengths in metabolic engineering, microbial biomanufacturing, and sustainable process development. One Research Fellow will be hired to support the microbial engineering and bioprocess development aspects of the project: The Research Fellow will work under Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). This role focuses on producing platform aromatics from C2 building blocks using engineered microbial strains, pathway engineering, and fermentation strategies. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the project towards a lab-scale demonstration of an integrated CO2-to-chemicals process. Key Responsibilities Conduct independent laboratory research related to microbial fermentation, strain engineering, and biotransformation. Develop and optimize microbial strains, biosynthetic pathways, and cultivation strategies to improve efficiency and product yield. Design and support the integration of biotechnological processes into a continuous lab-scale system. Characterize and analyze chemical and biological products using advanced analytical techniques. Collaborate closely with project team members and external collaborators across metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, and related disciplines. Document research findings, prepare technical reports, contribute to scientific publications, and help supervise junior researchers or students when needed. Qualifications & Experience PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, or a related field. Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: microbial fermentation, metabolic engineering, biotransformations, or bioprocess development. Hands-on experience with genetic engineering, molecular biology techniques, and strain construction is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative projects. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. A strong publication record or clear evidence of research productivity will be an advantage. Our lab uses Python, MATLAB and C++ to automate both data analysis and process control. Knowledge in these tools as well as emerging agentic AI will also be an advantage.  Professional Development The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based on performance and project needs. The Research Fellow will have opportunities to lead publications, present at conferences, and build an independent research profile within the project. The role offers strong exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration in sustainable chemical manufacturing and carbon utilization research.
