The University of Chicago came to life in the twilight of the 19th century, with the state of Illinois issuing its official certificate of incorporation in September 1890. A $600,000 pledge from oil magnate John D. Rockefeller helped to get the university off the ground, while local department store owner Marshall Field donated land. The vision of the university’s first president was of a “bran splinter new” institution “as solid as the ancient hills” – a modern research university with a commitment to equal opportunities and non-sectarianism.

This vision has been at the core of Chicago’s existence, enshrined in its motto: Crescat scientia; vita excolatur (“Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life enriched”). The university has lived up to this by being at the forefront of major academic endeavour and discovery. It has connections to more than 80 Nobel laureates, 30 National Medal winners (across humanities, arts and science) and nine Fields Medallists. It has also been awarded nearly 50 MacArthur “genius grants”.

Current faculty who have won a Nobel prize while at Chicago include economists Robert E. Lucas (1995), James J. Heckman (2000), Roger Myerson (2007), Lars Peter Hansen (2013), Eugene Fama (2013), and physicist James Cronin (1980). Ngô Bao Châu, the first Vietnamese to win the Fields Medal (2010), is the Francis and Rose Yuen distinguished service professor in Chicago’s department of mathematics.

Notable alumni of Chicago include authors Saul Bellow and Susan Sontag, astronomer Edwin Hubble, film critic Roger Ebert, and everyone’s favourite celluloid academic and archaeologist, Indiana Jones – who also taught at the university.

While Chicago routinely ranks in the world’s top institutions academically, its prowess extends to the sporting arena. It was a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, the oldest, highest-level intercollegiate athletics conference in the US. Today the university sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports, which cater for more than 500 participants and 330 competitions taking place each year. They all play under the same name, “the Maroons”, which the university was nicknamed on account of its official colour.

The university’s campus sprawls over more than 210 acres in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighbourhoods, which lie south of downtown Chicago. Its first buildings were modelled on the Gothic style of the University of Oxford, but by the mid-20th century, modern buildings had begun popping up to intersperse old and new. It now blends a mix of classical and contemporary architecture from the Mitchell Tower and Robie House, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic residence, through to the Laird Bell Law Quadrangle.

The city of Chicago itself is the university’s “laboratory, playground, and muse”, with downtown highlights encompassing restaurants, shopping and cultural attractions. In one day you could visit the Navy Pier amusement park, the Art Institute of Chicago or shop on the Magnificent Mile.

With satellite campuses and facilities overseas, UChicago has transcended its US geography to make itself an international institution. It invites prospective students to step inside its walls and “walk along the paths of Nobel laureates, pathbreaking researchers, and tomorrow’s leaders”.

The Vietnamese-German University (VGU) is seeking a highly qualified full-time lecturer in Asset Pricing. Candidates must hold a PhD in this field or a closely related field and have a strong background in research. Relevant international experience is of advantage. The successful candidate will become part of an international network of universities and research institutes. Teaching Responsibilities In the role of a lecturer, the successful candidate will teach graduate courses in MBA and Master of Global Finance and Economics programs, and undergraduate courses in Business Administration and Finance and Accounting. The expected workload for the in-class lecture conduction is 08 academic hours per week, totaling 240 academic hours per year (1 academic hour equals to 45 minutes). Teaching should reflect current research methods and results, and comprises lectures on the following modules: Finance 2 at the level of texts such as Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives by Hull (https://www.pearson.com/us/higher-education/product/Hull-Options-Futures-and-Other-Derivatives-9th-Edition/9780133456318.html). Advanced Fundamentals of Asset Pricing topics such as term structure of interest rates, bond pricing, credit and liquidity risk, portfolio theory, equity valuation, hedging. Advanced Topics in Asset Pricing such as Behavioral Finance; Big-Data-Based Personal Finance; Computational Finance; Credit Risk Derivatives; Hedge Funds; Investment and Pension Finance; Real Estate Finance; Risk Management of Insurance Companies. Lecturer is invited to propose semi-elective courses within his/her expertise and in line with the curriculum of the programs. The named courses are subject to change upon realistic needs of the programs and joint agreement between the lecturer, relevant Academic Coordinators, and Dean/Vice Dean in charge of teaching. Courses may requires conducting relevant laboratory activities and/or advising student projects. The holder of this job is also responsible for supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses and mentoring Ph.D. students. Research Responsibilities As a faculty member of a research-oriented university, the successful candidate is expected to significantly contribute to the scientific profile of VGU through innovation. This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as applied research in the fields of Finance, Economics and Management. The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly desirable. Administrative responsibilities The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the bachelor’s and master’s programs by participating in administrative, marketing and other public activities of the program in consultation with the Academic Coordinator of the study program and the German partner university, namely Goethe University Frankfurt. She or he is also expected to contribute actively to the academic self-administration of the Faculty of Economics and Management and university by being willing to stand for election to the Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or other bodies. Qualification Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Finance or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as experience and understanding of the German higher education system and methodology. Other requirements include: An outstanding academic record with a focus on Finance or other areas closely related to it Proven expertise in Asset Pricing. We develop AI methods to understand the relationships between brain activity, behavior, and consciousness, and to use these insights to derive new therapeutic approaches for neurological disorders. Co-Curricular Programs Coordinator (Residential Life) Full time, Continuing position $107, 312 Base + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The University is seeking for a Co-curricular Programs Coordinator for the Residential Life Program to support the design, coordination and delivery of inclusive, high-quality co-curricular programs that enhance the student experience for students living in residential accommodation. The role is a combination of events management, project coordination and logistical support contributing to a consistently excellent student experience in University-owned accommodation sites. The Program Coordinator will play a key operational role in delivering and enhancing the coveted Residential Life Intramural Championship Program, which engages over 3,000 students across 14 residences. Working collaboratively with the Senior Co curricular Programs Coordinator (Residential Life), the Program Coordinator will take responsibility for the day to day coordination of arts and social sport activities, including scheduling, logistics, event delivery, and on the ground program operations.
