Université Mouloud Mammeri de Tizi-Ouzou was established in 1977 as the Centre Universitaire de Tizi-Ouzou with fewer than 500 students. It achieved university status in 1989 Today it is a major centre for Amazigh (also known as Berber) studies, with 1200 students annually registering to study the language, more than enrol to take Arabic, English or French. The university is spread across five campuses – Hasnaoua I and II, Boukhalfa, Exhabitat and Tamda. There are plans for further expansion on the Tamda campus which opened in 2013. There are nine faculties: construction engineering, letters and literature, biology and agricultural science, law and political science, science, management and commercial science, humanities and social sciences, medicine and electrical and computer engineering. The largest faculty, business, welcomes 3,700 students annually. International partners include the University of Rouen.

About the position The NTNU University Museum is excited to invite applications from highly qualified candidates for a fully-funded PhD project focusing on human osteoarchaeology. This is a 3-year temporary position, with the possibility of extending up to four years including career-promoting work, for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with experience in human osteoarchaeology, stable isotope analysis or other biomolecular methods. As a PhD candidate with us, you will earn a doctorate and gain valuable experience working ethically with bioarchaeological materials in a laboratory setting, developing research skills for a future career in or outside academia.  Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department. About the project The topic of the PhD will involve studying infant feeding and maternal and infant health in the Norwegian past, but the specific aims of the project will be developed in collaboration with the candidate. This position will benefit from access to extensive human osteology collections curated by the NTNU University Museum, as well as state-of-the-art laboratories for stable isotope analysis and radiocarbon dating.  Duties of the position For a position as a PhD candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree within the employment period. Publication of the project results in peer-reviewed journals is expected. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and validating objective texture testing methods that can accurately categorize foods within the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, with a specific focus on Level 5 (Minced & Moist). This role will involve designing custom test fixtures, conducting practical laboratory work, and performing data analysis to create a robust and reliable testing protocol. Key Responsbilities: Conduct a comprehensive literature review on food rheology, texture analysis, particle analysis, image analysis and the IDDSI framework. Design and execute experiments to develop new instrumental texture analysis methods suitable for IDDSI Level 5 foods. Validate new methods against existing standards and a sensory panel to ensure accuracy and clinical relevance. Collect, analyze, and interpret data from instrumental and sensory evaluations. Document all experimental procedures, findings, and analyses in technical reports and prepare presentations to industry stakeholders and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborate with a research team, including food scientists, clinicians, and engineers, to ensure the developed methods are practical and clinically relevant. Job Requirements: A degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. A Master's or Ph.D. in a related research field is advantageous. Experience with instrumental texture, image analysis and particle sizing techniques (e.g., texture analyzers, universal testing machines) is highly desirable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in material characterization techniques, such as stress-strain characterization. Proficiency in analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, R, or other statistical software). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
