Rice University is an intimately sized research university in the heart of Houston, Texas, with a focus on undergraduates and a reputation for unconventional thinking.

Edgar Odell Lovett , the first president of Rice, said “[We must] keep the standards up and the numbers down”, and even today there are only a few thousand students.
Lovett introduced a college system whereby students and faculty would live, eat and learn in the same environment.

Over 70% of undergraduates and nearly all first year students live on the 300-acre campus and everybody is a member of one of 11 co-ed colleges. There are no sororities or fraternities and students of different majors and ages live together.

Rice has eight schools of Architecture, Continuing Studies, Engineering, Humanities, Business, Music, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences, with an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 6 to 1 and a median undergraduate class size of 14.

Since Rice’s inception, exams have not been proctored as students are trusted not to cheat.

Rice’s history dates back to 1891 when businessman William Marsh Rice created a charter for the William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, which required that the institute would begin only after his death.

In 1900 he was murdered by his valet, who planned and failed to inherit his estate using a forged will, and in 1912 the institute was born with 77 students, including women, and 12 members of faculty.

Research is not just for faculty members, as over half of the university’s undergraduates also take part, and Rice has been instrumental in the creation of nanotechnology, artificial hearts and Buckyballs.

Rice alumni include several US Congressmen and Cabinet Secretaries, nine astronauts, nine Major League Baseball players, two Nobel Laureates and four fictional literary characters.

The university has a tradition of elaborate practical jokes, the most famous being in 1988 when three engineers, three scientists and an English major developed a successful plan to rotate the university’s 2,000 pound statue of William Marsh Rice by 180 degrees.

Rice’s many wacky rituals include the Beer Bike intramural race and drinking competition dating from the opening of the residential colleges in 1957. However, because of a change in alcohol laws, most students now drink water instead of beer.

About the Role The Flinders Ageing Alliance is a transdisciplinary initiative that brings together researchers, consumer representatives, and external partners to address the complex challenges of ageing. As a Senior Research Fellow, Flinders Ageing Alliance, you will have to opportunity to work within priority areas of the initiative such as identifying opportunities, shaping research concepts, and coordinating projects development processes that position Flinders as a national leader in ageing research. A snapshot of this work is listed below: Make a significant contribution to ethical, high quality and innovative research as a key member of the Flinders Ageing Alliance, through activities such as sustained high-quality publications, external grant acquisitions and presenting at the national and international level. Work independently as well as collaboratively with Flinders ageing Alliance members, stakeholders, and leadership on the research projects, as well as contribute to research leadership by fostering research excellence. About You You are a dedicated thought-leader in the health care space, specialising in aged care research who thrives in a structured environment with clearly defined scope and responsibilities. You are passionate about inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals, evident through your experience successfully supervising PhD and/or undergraduate students. You will also demonstrate the following: Completion of a PhD or equivalent in a discipline and context relevant to health services, aged care, epidemiology, gerontology or relevant areas. Extensive evidence of relevant experience, activity and knowledge of the aged care context/industry or equivalent sector. Established evidence of an outstanding research track record (for career stage) in an area aligned with research strengths in aged care, health or social services, including evidence of sustained high-quality publications with corresponding authorship and attraction of competitive grants. A strong ability to develop and maintain effective research collaborations within the university and wider community including with industry, government, consumer representatives and other organisations. Building on more than a decade of success, the inaugural SDL will serve as the head of the Schwarzman Scholars’ leadership development pillar—one of the program’s three core pillars alongside academics and student life—at Schwarzman College, located within Tsinghua University, one of the world’s most prestigious institutions. Reporting to the Executive Director of Schwarzman Scholars (New York) and the Dean of Schwarzman College (Beijing), the SDL is a senior member of the leadership team and works in close partnership with the Chief Student Affairs Officer and faculty colleagues at Tsinghua University. Based on site in Beijing, the SDL plays a critical role in translating the program’s ambition—preparing future global leaders with a deep understanding of China—into leadership learning that is coherent, rigorous, experiential, and globally relevant. Founded in 2013 through a partnership between Stephen A. Schwarzman and Tsinghua University, Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded, one-year master’s degree program in global affairs designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders. The program offers a dynamic curriculum grounded in the pillars of China, leadership, and global affairs, with learning opportunities in and beyond the classroom, including leadership training, senior mentors, high-level interactions with Chinese leaders and visiting speakers, career development guidance, and Deep Dive trips across China. Each year, 150 Scholars from a wide range of geographies, industries, and academic backgrounds are selected from a highly competitive global applicant pool (approximately 5% admit rate). Although now more than a decade old, Schwarzman Scholars remains a builder’s environment. Each year hosts a new cohort, faculty and international visitors cycle in and out, and the institution continues to evolve. The Senior Director, Leadership plays a central role in bringing coherence and continuity to the leadership pillar—ensuring that leadership learning is experienced not as a set of disconnected moments, but as an intentional developmental journey that integrates academic study, immersive experiences across China, and daily life in residence. Central to this work is engaging thoughtfully with global leadership traditions, helping Scholars understand leadership across cultures, political systems, and institutional contexts without privileging a single model. The SDL serves as a connector and translator between academic content and lived experience, working closely with senior staff, faculty, visiting dignitaries, and global practitioners to ensure quality, alignment, and intellectual integrity across offerings. The SDL is responsible for designing, delivering, and continuously refining a leadership development framework that integrates academic and experiential components and resonates with a globally diverse cohort of early-career professionals. The role calls for a practitioner-scholar: someone with lived leadership experience, strong facilitation skills, intellectual credibility, and the presence to engage and challenge high-performing Scholars in both formal and informal settings. The successful candidate will bring significant leadership experience in contexts that may include government, international organizations, NGOs, diplomacy, or global institutions. A traditional academic career or PhD is not required. The SDL will bring a global orientation, high emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and comfort navigating ambiguity and sensitive conversations. Experience designing and delivering experiential learning and leadership development programs is essential, as is the ability to work effectively across cultures.
