IIIa Reference no.: 5296 Your personal sphere of influence: The Institute for Economic and Social History (WISO) at the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies is looking to fill the position of “IT Support Specialist”, starting May 1, 2026. The Institute for Economic and Social History (WISO) conducts research and teaching in economic, social, and cultural history in an integrative manner and, in cooperation with other historical institutes, also teaches history. It examines and teaches economic, social, and cultural developments in a global, national, regional, and local context up to the present day. We are a dynamic team and host numerous third-party funded projects financed by national and international funding agencies such as FWF, Jubiläumsfonds, and EU programs. The position is initially limited to one year, but may be converted to a permanent position by mutual agreement. Your specific tasks: Planning requirements and procuring and managing hardware and software. Installing, configuring, and maintaining hardware and software equipment. Managing and maintaining IP addresses and the IP database (BAM) Providing technical support for peripheral infrastructure (media technology, copiers, printers, projectors, telephony). Providing technical support for courses and other events at the institute. IT support and advice for users. Support in complying with data protection regulations (GDPR) and the university's IT security requirements. Interface to the Central IT Service. Installation and maintenance of project websites (mainly Wordpress), Support for the institute's websites. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This project focuses on federated causal inference in heterogeneous data environments, addressing the challenge of enabling trustworthy causal analysis across distributed datasets while preserving privacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel federated learning strategies for causal inference. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on algorithm design and development on real-world datasets. The core responsibility is to build and validate federated causal inference algorithms through simulations and live demonstrations. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Derivation of novel performance metrics for federated causal inference algorithms. Analysis of causal inference models in federated settings using synthetic and real-world datasets. Design and development of novel federated causal inference algorithms and associated software APIs. Validation of algorithms via simulations and live demonstrations. Job Requirements A Master's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent. Strong theoretical background in statistics and machine learning. Knowledge of the basics of federated learning and causal inference is highly encouraged. Proven track record in research and development of machine learning algorithms. Proficiency in algorithm development using Python and ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Key Competencies Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university. Self-directed learner who believes in continuous learning and development. In addition to developing an ambitious research agenda, the appointee will contribute to education in the field, including participation in Aalto’s international Quantum Technology BSc program. We welcome research across the broad frontiers of photonics and quantum technologies. A wide range of topics is considered relevant for this position: the topics may include solid-state hybrid quantum devices, integrated quantum photonics, two-dimensional materials, quantum dots, nanophotonics, optical quantum computing, and other related emerging & disruptive photonics areas. Research that combines micro and nanofabrication of photonic devices and quantum systems to find novel fundamental phenomena as well as functionalities that can lead to practical applications in quantum, information, or other technologies is particularly encouraged.
