Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio. With its roots dating back to 1826, it became the university it is today in 1967 following a merger between Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University.

The university serves over 11,000 students who are drawn from all 50 US states of America and 86 different countries.

CWRU is made up of eight schools. These are the school of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Applied Social Sciences, Dental Medicine, Medicine, Law, Management, plus a Graduate Studies school. Faculty members total around 3,300.

It offers nearly 95 undergraduate degree programmes, 135 graduate and professional courses, and close to 140 dual-degree programmes. In addition to this, the university has over 100 interdisciplinary academic and research centres and institutes that, between them, provide an extensive range of study.

The university campus comprises 185 acres of land in Cleveland’s University Circle – known as ‘Ohio’s most spectacular square mile’ – and a 389-acre farm in the picturesque suburb of Hunting Valley.

CWRU has a budget of over $1 billion and research revenues of around $360 million. As well as an endowment of approximately $1.7 billion, it draws funds of roughly $166 million from private sources in the form of gifts and pledges.

It is a member of the Association of American Universities and has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commision of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a university with very high research activity.

The CWRU alumni network is more than 100,000 strong and the University is associated with 16 Nobel laureates.

Students of CWRU are known as Spartans because, like their namesake warriors, they ‘value an education that engages mind and body’.

The role will be a part of the , which was established in 1964 initially as a Department of Social Theory and Institutions.The Department delivers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Sociology, Criminology and Social Work and supports the delivery of a faculty research methods programme as part of the collaborative NINEDTP. Description The Clinical Artificial Intelligence Lab at NYU Abu Dhabi seeks to improve patient care by developing new machine learning methodologies that tackle unique computational problems in healthcare applications. We use large real-world complex datasets, including data extracted from electronic health records and medical images, for applications pertaining to patient diagnostics and prognostics. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team and make significant contributions to the field. The researcher is expected to have (i) strong machine learning skills to improve model performance and robustness, and (ii) exemplary passion and motivation to pursue multidisciplinary research at the intersection of computing and healthcare. Methodologies of interest include: multi-modal learning, foundation models, including large language models, agentic AI, multi-agent AI systems, transfer learning, self-supervised learning, and federated learning. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be primarily based at NYU Abu Dhabi. The researcher will report directly to Dr. Farah Shamout and work in close collaboration with other researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate research assistants. The researcher will engage with our regular collaborators across the NYU campuses and local medical institutions in the UAE. Key Responsibilities Research Support the supervisor in developing and implementing the research agenda; Conduct high-quality and innovative research primarily focused on ML methodology development for healthcare; Generate new high-impact ideas based on gaps and limitations of the state-of-the-art (SOTA); Design and implement experiments to compare proposed work with SOTA baselines; Publish research findings in high-impact journals and conferences; Communicate and present research findings at international academic gatherings; Create, maintain, and document high-quality research code for reproducibility; Maintain good practice in managing and accessing sensitive medical datasets; Assist the supervisor in the preparation of grant applications (as appropriate); And collaborate with scientists within the NYU Global Network and in Abu Dhabi. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This project focuses on federated causal inference in heterogeneous data environments, addressing the challenge of enabling trustworthy causal analysis across distributed datasets while preserving privacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel federated learning strategies for causal inference. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on algorithm design and development on real-world datasets. The core responsibility is to build and validate federated causal inference algorithms through simulations and live demonstrations. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Derivation of novel performance metrics for federated causal inference algorithms. Analysis of causal inference models in federated settings using synthetic and real-world datasets. Design and development of novel federated causal inference algorithms and associated software APIs. Validation of algorithms via simulations and live demonstrations.
