This timeline of the 100 Under 50 shows that there was a golden age of university construction in the 1960s, with the UK’s Robbins institutions joined by a plethora of foundations around the world. The ranking, despite being dominated by the Anglo-Australian-American academies, is led by Asian institutions established in the 1980s and 1990s. Although age matters, even in a ranking celebrating new universities, it seems there is no substitute for massive amounts of state funding
