A thirsty thinker

According to Sir David Bell (What are you reading? , 25 January), “Gordon Brown was Britain’s most cerebral modern prime minister”. Another contender is surely Harold Wilson, who was both an economist and an applied statistician. Indeed, at receptions if he could flawlessly say “I am a former president of the Royal Statistical Society”, he would enjoy another drink.
