About European University Institute

Basic information and contact details for European University Institute

institution
The European University Institute (EUI) is an international centre for doctorate and post-doctorate studies and research. The four departments at the EUI – economics, history and civilization, law, and political and social sciences – host a multi-national community with no one dominant culture, consisting of nearly 900 scholars who represent more than 60 nationalities. Since its establishment in 1972 by the six founding members of the then European Communities, the EUI has earned a reputation as a leading international academic institution with a European focus, successfully pursuing its aim to provide advanced academic training in the social sciences for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The EUI was established with the goal of fostering research in fields that are of particular interest for the development of Europe. The research carried out at the EUI is thus not only on subjects that are relevant to the internal policies of the European Union, but also to subjects that aim at assessing Europe’s role on the global stage, such as international security, comparative foreign policy and global governance. Besides being a teaching and research institute, the EUI acts as a hub for a network that includes various European universities, international organisations, national research centres and institutions. The EUI has a strong commitment to fostering learning at post-doctoral level though the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies, the largest international postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and humanities in Europe, which provides advanced training to young academics from around the world. In addition, the EUI is home to the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, which conducts interdisciplinary, comparative and policy research on integration, governance and democracy, regulating markets and governing money, and 21st-century world politics and Europe. Admission to the EUI is very selective. Each year only 160 researchers from the best universities in Europe and beyond are admitted on the basis of the quality of their curriculum and research proposal. The EUI offers excellent career prospects for its researchers and postdoctoral fellows. More than 30 per cent of all EUI alumni now occupy senior positions in their chosen career paths; 69 per cent of EUI graduates go on to careers in academia or research (universities and research centres); 19 per cent develop their careers in the private sector and in national public authorities; and 12 per cent play a role in the international arena by joining European institutions and other international organisations.

About Us The TOUR (Transforming cancer OUtcomes through Research) team is committed to improving patient outcomes by translating oncology research into clinical practice, with a strong emphasis on patient-centred care and quality of life. Led by Professor Mieke Van Hemelrijck, the team includes a diverse group of researchers—spanning qualitative and quantitative disciplines—alongside clinicians, students, research nurses, and trial coordinators. Together, they work across a wide range of translational oncology projects, with a particular focus on the development and implementation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). A key strand of TOUR’s work involves collaboration with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group, where the team contributes to the development and validation of tools to assess health-related quality of life in cancer patients. These projects often involve international partnerships and span a variety of cancer types and treatment contexts. This post will support the studies with the EORTC as well as a collaborative quality of life research project with The Royal Marsden Hospital, focusing on the integration of patient perspectives into cancer care. The successful candidate will be based within the TOUR team and will hold an honorary contract with The Royal Marsden, enabling access to data and facilitating close collaboration with clinical and research colleagues across both institutions.  About the role We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join the TOUR (Transforming cancer OUtcomes through Research) team at Guy’s Cancer. Reporting to Professor Mieke Van Hemelrijck and the senior TOUR team, the post holder will be responsible for providing administrative and project management support across the quality of life research portfolio. Key responsibilities include coordinating ethics submissions, supporting patient recruitment and qualitative interviews, managing study documentation, and assisting with data collection and analysis. The role will also involve liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery. This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in health, psychology, or a related discipline who is passionate about patient-centred research. The successful candidate will be based at Guy’s Cancer Centre and will also hold an honorary contract with The Royal Marsden Hospital, enabling access to data and facilitating collaboration across both institutions. If you are enthusiastic about improving cancer care through high-quality research and want to be part of a supportive team, we encourage you to apply. About us This is an exciting opportunity to gain and develop research skills. The post-holder will join Dr Tom Pollak’s research group and play a key role in innovative studies taking a new immunologically focussed approach to understanding and treating neuropsychiatric disorders. The group is investigating how the immune system may hold clues to how psychosis and other psychiatric disorders are caused and how people respond to treatments. We will investigate blood and cerebrospinal fluid from patients and use machine-learning to identify the treatment-relevant immune processes, with an emphasis on immune cells, autoantibodies and inflammatory markers. If we can show causal links, our work could guide future targeted immune-based interventions. The studies involve subject recruitment and collection of clinical data and bio samples (blood and cerebrospinal fluid) from patients. The main focus is on an exciting new prospective, longitudinal study aiming to assess the immunological effects of antipsychotic treatment. It is being led by a team from KCL and the Francis Crick Institute and is unique for its interdisciplinary nature, combining expertise from clinical psychiatry, immunology and neuroscience, with significant ongoing input from people with lived experience of psychosis. The post-holder will have a central role in the team and will contribute to its dynamic, friendly and supportive culture, and to its strong spirit of multidisciplinary scientific enquiry. The Department of Psychosis Studies is one of the world’s leading centres for research into psychotic disorders.
