Scottish students were this week expecting a particularly fair hearing from first minister Jack McConnell as they warned the Scottish Parliament about crippling levels of student debt. They had with them an amendment to a motion at a Stirling students' association meeting, stressing that education was a right and not a privilege. The amendment also called for universal grants and condemned loans as undermining access. The amendment was dated 1980 and tabled by student activist Jack McConnell.
