York University is spearheading an autumn jobs bonanza with a raft of new chairs and readerships across a range of disciplines.
The university is offering 20 new posts in this week's Times Higher . Among the dozens of other job advertisements, three institutions are offering 17 posts between them.
The posts at York, which help to mark the university's 40th anniversary, feed into a plan to create 1,000 academic positions as the institution doubles in size over the next 15 years and opens a new campus at Heslington East.
Brian Cantor, the vice-chancellor, said: "We are determined to attract scholars of international standing before and during that expansion."
Although its plans for a new campus received outline planning permission from York City Council, they met with some local objections and will be subject to a public inquiry by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
If the new campus gets the go-ahead, York will introduce new subjects such as theatre, film, television studies, law and dentistry.
About 1,000 academic-related and support jobs will be created on top of the 1,000 academic posts and some 2,500 more jobs will be created in related research activity in spin-off companies.
The present round of new academic vacancies cover biology, chemistry, computer science, maths, physics, psychology, economics, education, environmental health, management studies, politics, social policy and social work, women's studies, archaeology, English, history, language and linguistics, music, philosophy, and reviews and dissemination.
Among the other institutions offering jobs this week are Liverpool University, which is seeking to fill four posts, Surrey University, which is looking to fill nine posts, and the London School of Economics, which wants to recruit four postdoctoral researchers.
