Writing a letter home can prove a rewarding task

一月 16, 2004

Students from across the globe have been invited to take part in the second International Student Awards, run by the British Council with support from The THES .

International students studying in the UK who wish to enter the competition must write a "letter home", as if to a relative, friend or teacher, describing their experiences. They will be competing for prizes worth up to £2,000.

The judges will be looking for evidence of entrants' non-academic experiences and activities, taking into account factors such as personal development since coming to the UK, contributions to institution or community life, challenges overcome, and sporting, artistic or cultural achievements.

The awards were launched last year as part of the British Council's promotion of the prime minister's initiative to attract more international students to the UK, and received entries from more than 1,700 students from 98 countries.

David Green, director-general of the British Council, said: "From the many inspiring entries we received last time, it is clear that international students in the UK gain as much from their non-academic activities and experiences as they do from their studies."

The awards are open to international students studying full time at UK universities, colleges, English language schools and boarding schools on courses lasting six months or more.

Entries must be in by March 1. To enter, go to www.educationuk.org/shine
