Palestinian students in the West Bank protested against the use of force by their police in Gaza, after two students were killed in demonstrations in support of Osama bin Laden. Sit-ins were staged at the universities of Nablus and Bethlehem, and 1,500 students from al-Najah University demonstrated against US air strikes on Afghanistan and international sanctions against Iraq.

Ibrahim Yalumov, rector of the Higher Islamic Institute in the Bulgarian capital, has publicly supported the USair strikes on Afghanistan as part of the fight against terrorism - "which is a phenomenon incompatible with the Islamic religion".

The European Court of Justice has upheld a European Commission directive on the legal protection of biotechnological inventions. Rejecting a plea for annulment by the Netherlands government, the court ruled that patent law was sufficiently stringent to safeguard human dignity and that it enhanced the smooth operation of the internal market and removed legal obstacles to genetic engineering.

Ten of Vietnam's state-run universities and colleges are to receive a budget increase in an effort to turn them into leading education centres and to meet a rising national demand for highly skilled labour, the ministry of education and training has announced.

Algerian premier Ali Benflis has signed four new laws aimed at boosting scientific research and courses for would-be secondary school teachers, at Algeria's universities. More than 2,200 new teaching posts in the country's secondary schools and universities have been created this year.
