United States exchange student John Tobin, who in April was sentenced to three years' jail in Russia for drug offences, could face an espionage charge. Mr Tobin's lawyer said the allegation that Mr Tobin tried to recruit a Russian biologist to spy is a false claim aimed at preventing early release of Mr Tobin.

Bilbao

Umberto Eco believes the benefits of the European Union's Erasmus student exchanges are as much "sexual" as cultural. At a conference in Spain, the Italian semiologist said Erasmus encouraged bilingual relationships and mixed marriages across Europe's national frontiers.

Paris

French student unions have healed a 30-year rift and reunited as the National Union of Students of France (Unef). The new union was formed by the pro-Socialist Unef-ID and the pro-Communist Unef-SE.

Khartoum

Two hundred West African students who had been boycotting classes for four months to demand the readmission of 13 excluded colleagues have been expelled from the International African University in Khartoum.

The first students started MBA courses this week at Hyderabad's Indian School of Business, a joint venture between 13 top Indian firms and three international business schools.

Tokyo

The 40 Japanese national universities with affiliated hospitals face a total of 112 malpractice lawsuits, the education ministry has said. University hospitals get three times the national average number of malpractice suits.

New Italian legislation gives scientists in state universities and research institutes rights to any discoveries they make. The institution will get 33 per cent of royalties.

Montevideo

The Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo has annulled 394 exam finals in paediatrics and surgery after discovering that the examining professor had used materials that were available to students on the internet.
