Kazakhstan is to have a space "presence" despite its repeated protests at environmental damage caused by Russian space launches and crashes at Baykonur cosmodrome. When the Soviet Union broke up, Kazakhstan was left with a space launch-pad, but had no way of making use of it. It remained an enclave of the Russian space programme. Russia has now offered Kazakhs participation in a project based on the new-generation Yamal communications satellite.
