HERIOT-WATT. At 44, Anton Muscatelli , who succeeds John Archer as principal on February 1, is probably the youngest vice-chancellor of a pre-92 institution. He has been Daniel Jack professor of economics at Glasgow University since 1994 and vice-principal since 2004, responsible for internal budgeting and fundraising. "Heriot-Watt has huge potential. It's very focused on science, engineering and business and is probably Scotland's most international university," he said.

Ruth Moir , formerly of the Interactive University, joins as campus secretary and deputy head of Heriot-Watt's Dubai campus.

Alexander McNeil , assistant professor in mathematics at ETH in Zurich, joins as professor of quantitative risk management.

Martin McCoustra , reader in chemical physics at Nottingham University, joins as professor of chemical physics.

Graham Turner , former senior lecturer in deaf studies at the University of Central Lancashire, joins as professor of translation studies.

Geoff Palmer , professor of brewing, has retired.

Peter Aspinall , professor of environmental studies, has retired.

Julian Wolfram , professor of offshore engineering, has retired.
