Welsh rejig opens door for deans

九月 9, 2005

Glamorgan University is looking to appoint five key academics as the first step in a major restructuring and expansion exercise that promises more new jobs.

The university is advertising in this week's Times Higher for five academic deans who will each head one of five new faculties being created from the institution's existing eight schools. It is hoped that the deans will be in post early next year to give them time to shape the faculties, which are due to open in the autumn.

The new faculties are part of a reshaping of the university that includes the establishment of a campus in Cardiff in 2007. Plans have yet to be announced officially and the university is cagey about the total investment.

But Peter Crofts, head of marketing and student recruitment, said that it was a multimillion-pound investment that would see student numbers increase by 15 per cent over the next five years.

Mr Crofts said: "No one is being made redundant and we are not closing anything down. As we reshape the portfolio, we will look to fill gaps that appear."

The new Cardiff campus will be home to the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries. The four other faculties are: business; health, sport and science; humanities and social sciences; and advanced technology. The university will retain its existing site at Treforest, near Pontypridd.

Merger talks between Glamorgan and University of Wales Institute, Cardiff collapsed in 2003. Mr Crofts said that while Glamorgan was still open to discussions, it could not afford to sit around ignoring what was best for the institution.
