War forces prince to drop study

十一月 7, 2003

A prince enrolled at Oxford University has had to abandon his studies to fight for his country.

Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, the prince of Bhutan, left St Peter's College this week. He had been at Oxford less than a month.

Rebels fighting to wrest the state of Assam from Indian control have been operating from training camps within Bhutan.

Prince Jigyel told the Oxford Student : "I've taken an oath of allegiance. Though I was happy here in this amazing city, I've done the right thing."

Master of St Peter's Bernard Silverman said if students had a good reason to request a leave of absence they could return to the university the following year.
