Martin Everett, the vice-chancellor of the University of East London, has left the university. He resigned on 24 February after more than seven months on suspension.
Professor Everett was suspended last July after allegations of “lack of leadership” were raised against him.
In a statement released today, the university said: “The board of governors and Professor Martin Everett have agreed that it would be in the best interests of the University of East London for him to resign as vice-chancellor.
“The board recognises Professor Everett’s considerable standing as an academic and researcher and makes no criticism of his integrity or conduct. However Professor Everett and the board both believe that, in the circumstances where there has been an irretrievable mutual breakdown in trust and confidence, a new vice-chancellor would be better placed to take the university forward. The board wishes Professor Everett well in his future career.
“Professor Everett would like to thank the staff and students for their support during his time as vice-chancellor and to wish the university the very best for the future.
“The board and Professor Everett both now wish a line to be drawn under the matter and will be making no further public comment.”
