EU announces first FP6 call for proposals
Universities, research centres and enterprises have been invited to respond to the first batch of calls for proposals for the £3.2 billion of European Commission funds. The seven priorities of the Sixth Framework programme, which include life sciences, information technology, nanotechnology, aeronautics and space, food quality and safety, sustainable development and citizens and governance, will account for 70 per cent of the sum.

Fathers spend most time at the office
Fathers are struggling to reconcile family and work obligations as they spend more time at the office than childless colleagues, according to a survey by the University of Hertfordshire today. It found a third of fathers spent more than 50 hours a week in the office, compared with a quarter of childless men and one in 20 childless women doing equivalent time.

Coventry no longer sent to Coventry over accounts
Coventry University has reported a £2.7 million surplus in its end-of-year financial results, its best for some years. Just two years ago it recorded a major annual deficit.

Glasgow researchers say heart failures will rise
The health service must start planning for a substantial rise in heart failure over the next 20 years, according to Glasgow University researchers. An epidemiological study led by John McMurray and published in Heart, says the ageing population alone will mean a 31 per cent increase in heart failure among men by 2020, and a 17 per cent increase among women.

Fresh insights into primate psychology revealed
Psychologists from St Andrews and Bern universities have gained new insights into primate evolution by tracking the hunting behaviour of wild leopards on the Ivory Coast. They found that monkeys evolved greater vigilance and a series of clever warning calls after realising that large body size and living in groups was no deterrent to being hunted.
