Strikes cause disruption at Yale
Yale university faces disruption today as unionised workers and several hundred graduate students who are seeking union recognition stage a five-day strike. Some academics have moved classes off campus so that students do not have to cross picket lines.

£2m to study the impact of climate change
A £2 million initiative designed to change the direction of climate change research was announced today. Traditionally much research has focused on the causes and possible prevention of climate change. But this new programme, which is hosted by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the UK Climate Impacts Programme at the University of Oxford, starts with an assumption that climate change is unavoidable, and will instead focus on how it will affect our urban areas, transport and utilities systems. Environment minister Michael Meacher said: "We need to start thinking right now about preparing for the impact of climate change on our built environment".

St Andrews celebrates med school reinstatement
St Andrews University is tonight holding a dinner for politicians, health professionals and Scottish medical deans to celebrate the reinstatement of its MD degree and medical school. Both were lost when Dundee University split from St Andrews in 1966, but the Scottish parliament recently restored the university's right to offer the research degree.
