'There will be no interference' insists A-level investigator
The man conducting the inquiry into the controversy over A-level grading insisted today he would not allow any interference in his investigation. Mike Tomlinson was speaking out after education secretary Estelle Morris was accused of improperly intervening in the inquiry by exams watchdog Sir William Stubbs.

Unison members strike over London weighting
Support staff in London's old universities are on strike today in protest at employers' failure to recognise the additional costs of living in the capital. Members of Unison agreed to strike for an annual London weighting lump sum of £4,000.

Indonesian authorities arrest British academic
British academic Lesley McCulloch, held over an alleged visa violation in Indonesia today tried to reassure her family of her safety. Dr McCulloch, a lecturer at the University of Tasmania, was arrested by soldiers for allegedly contacting separatist rebels in the country. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, she said that the Indonesian public prosecutor's office was still considering whether to press charges over a violation of her tourist visa.

Free courses for adult learners in Cumbria
Cumbria County Council is launching a new programme for adult learners. The free course will give people the opportunity to gain a certificate in community learning accredited by the University of Lancaster and an introductory course in teaching basic skills.

Queen's Belfast targets SMEs in bursaries bid
Queen's University Belfast is targeting small and medium-sized enterprises throughout Northern Ireland for contributions to a new bursaries and scholarships scheme to help widen access. This is the latest stage of its £150 million fundraising campaign.
