NHS university plans outlined today
Plans to launch a National Health Service university aimed at improving the education and training of staff were being outlined today. The idea, which is being put forward for consultation, is being heralded by the government as providing "a key role in reforming the NHS."
Education sector staff the most committed
A significant proportion of Britain's companies may be failing to get the most out of their staff, according to a survey published today. The highest level of commitment both to the organisation and type of work was in the education sector (60 per cent), according to market information company Taylor Nelson Sofres.
Scientists close to stress and heart disease link
Researchers today claimed to be closer to proving the link between stress and heart disease. A team from University College London examined the biological rather than psychological effects of stress in 183 men aged 45 to 63. Stress from work, as well as the men's lifestyles, was found to be linked with metabolic syndrome, which is thought to be a precursor to coronary heart disease.
Napier awards actor honorary degree
Actor Robert Carlyle was today receiving an honorary degree from Napier University in Edinburgh, the city where he shot to stardom as the psychotic Begbie in Trainspotting . Carlyle was due to receive an honorary doctor of arts degree in recognition of his contribution to Scottish drama.
Pizza millionaire orders slice of US college action
Thomas S. Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, has promised to spend $200 million (£1 million) on a new Catholic university outside Naples, Florida. Mr Monaghan, who sold the pizza chain in 1998, has already established a Roman Catholic college and law school in Michigan through his Ave Maria Foundation.
