Theresa May, Conservative transport spokesman and former shadow education secretary, was appointed party chairman today after leader Iain Duncan Smith sacked David Davis. The Maidenhead MP becomes the first woman chair of the Conservatives in the party’s history.

A conference aimed at giving couch potatoes a major wake-up call was getting under way at the University of Aberdeen today. More than 175 scientists and healthcare experts were due to attend the conference, that follows a study of more than 100 preschool children in Scotland by John Reilly of the University of Glasgow that found "worrying levels" of inactivity in youngsters.
Maths whizz-kids converge on Glasgow
Hundreds of young students from 85 countries were gathering in the UK today for the opening of the 43rd International Mathematical Olympiad at the University of Glasgow. The UK contestants - five boys and a girl aged between 15 and 18 and from England - were selected from 40,000 hopefuls.
