Israelis detain UK research fellow
A Birmingham University research fellow was today reported to be on hunger strike in an Israeli jail after being detained at a Palestinian refugee camp. The university is investigating claims that Josie Sandercock had been detained by Israeli authorities while taking part in a peace protest. Ms Sandercock works in the university's public health and epidemiology department.

Ashworth fights for academic refugees
John Ashworth, former chief scientist and director of the London School of Economics and new president of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics, has cautioned the government about the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill. He said we must ensure "that the good record of welcoming academic refugees is recognised and continued".

Cross-border degree unveiled in Ireland
Queen's University, Belfast, and Dublin City University are launching a cross-border masters degree in cross-border studies. Students on the part-time two-year course will have access to the libraries and online facilities of both universities.
