A new masters degree in Islamic education is to be offered by the University of Winchester. The degree aims to improve community leadership and cohesion by training Muslim religious leaders about effective communication within Western societies. It will also consider ways to help Muslim communities retain their identity while simultaneously assimilating with their host countries. The programme is validated by the university's faculty of education and is taught in Damascus, Syria, via distance learning and face-to-face tutoring.
