University of Salford - Sichuan's saviour honoured

The efforts of a University of Salford scientist to prevent the spread of a killer disease have been honoured by the Chinese Government. The work of Phil Craig, from Salford's School of Environment and Life Sciences, is credited with helping to save the lives of thousands of people in Sichuan province. His research has focused on a tapeworm that spreads from animals to humans, causing parasitic cysts to grow in the liver. In the past decade, his team has screened more than 10,000 people using portable ultrasound, with a 10 per cent detection rate for the parasite. He has been awarded the Sichuan Jinding Prize for his contributions to healthcare.
