University of Salford - Jobs for the boys ... and girls

It may have the reputation of being a job for the boys, but a project at the University of Salford aims to increase female interest in engineering. More than 100 girls from schools around the UK and overseas, including Nigeria and Belgium, attended a recent event as part of the project run by the Royal Academy of Engineering. They were supervised by Salford engineering lecturer Haifa Takruri-Rizk and visited nearby BBC studios and facilities operated by Airbus. Dr Takruri-Rizk said: "Only 10 per cent of people in engineering are women. Hopefully these girls will be encouraged to see themselves in this sort of career."
