The once-pioneering UK recording studio sector is dying, largely thanks to the destabilising economic effect of software. Research at the University of Nottingham suggests that the progressive increase in independent studios and equipment suppliers has led to the sector naturally shrinking. But researchers have also found that the problem has accelerated with the introduction of readily available software that allows bands to record away from the studio.
