An orthopaedic surgeon has performed a groundbreaking operation on a chimpanzee in Cameroon to correct a deformity to its arm. The three-year-old female lives in a chimpanzee reserve but was unable to climb and had difficulty walking because a bone in her forearm had stopped growing. The deformity, seen more commonly in dogs, may have been exacerbated when she was chained at the wrist by traders who wanted to sell her as a pet. Rob Pettitt, a surgeon at the University of Liverpool's Small Animal Teaching Hospital, carried out the operation.
