Engineers in Wales are bringing light to a community in rural Zambia as part of a United Nations project to help people living without electricity. A team led by Demetri Djialli, head of knowledge transfer at the University of Glamorgan, has designed a lantern powered by solar energy for use by rural communities. "The main source of food in this community is fish from the local lake, and the most effective way of catching these fish is to go out on to the lake at night with a light source. We have designed a fishing lantern that can be charged via solar power during the daytime and then used by the fishermen at night," Professor Djialli explained.
