The nicer you are, the less likely you are to earn a high salary, concludes a study into the relationship between personality and pay carried out at the University of Essex. Researchers found that the link was so strong that even being conscientious did not provide any statistically significant pay reward. Nice people earned about 6 per cent less, or 72 pence less per hour, the study suggests. The study found that the same pay penalty applies to people with a degree of neuroticism, and that extroverts and those "open to experience" are paid the best.
