Popeye put his trust in spinach, and parents everywhere tell their children that carrots will help them see in the dark, but scientists are on a quest to prove that broccoli tops the vegetable pops. Initial research by scientists at the University of East Anglia indicates that a compound found in broccoli called sulforaphane can block enzymes that cause joint destruction by osteoarthritis. Supported by funding from Arthritis Research UK and the Diet and Health Research Industry Club, the UEA project will explore how sulforaphane may slow or prevent the development of osteoarthritis.
