University of Aberdeen - International rescue

A team of ocean experts led by University of Aberdeen marine scientist Monty Priede were involved in the rescue of a British sportsman who was aiming to break the world record for rowing solo across the Atlantic. Professor Priede, director of the university's Oceanlab, was leading a study of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge when his team responded to a mayday alert. Peter Bray - who was rowing from Newfoundland, in Canada, to the Isles of Scilly - issued a distress call after experiencing 6-metre swell and 40-knot winds. The marine scientists diverted their course by 110 miles to rescue Mr Bray.
