Brussels, 17 June 2002

A European conference on the theme of 'Science for water policy: the implications of the water framework directive' on 2 to 4 September in Norwich, UK.

This three day interdisciplinary conference, organized by the Marie Curie Fellowship Association and the University of East Anglia, will focus on how science can contribute to policy in the context of the Water Framework Directive, covering all aspects of water management from groundwater to surface water, from freshwater ecosystems to estuaries and coastal waters.

The event will include keynote speeches from representatives of the European Commission, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), industry and national governments. Scientific papers will be presented in parallel sessions dedicated to the main areas of the Water Framework Directive.

The conference will end with a round table to discuss issues relating to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and new research needs, followed by a field trip to the Norfolk Broads.

Scientists from all disciplines, and young scientists in particular, are encouraged to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation on themes broadly related to the Water Framework Directive.

Scholarships towards the costs of the conference, including travel and accommodation, will be available for up to 50 young scientists.
