* The University for Industry is now called "learndirect", it was revealed this week at the launch of the first 68 of the 1,000 drop-in learning centres to be fully operational by autumn 2000.
The name UfI was found to alienate many people and will remain only as the limited company name. The Pounds 10 million marketing campaign will use the title learndirect. Pilot centres include one at Sunderland football club and another at Kent's Bluewater shopping centre.
