Academics with a head for business are being sought for a new department at University College London, writes Alan Thomson.

In this week's Times Higher , the college is offering three positions in its engineering sciences faculty in technology management and innovation.

Separately, it is also advertising seven posts in electronic and electrical engineering.

UCL says the first three posts are central to the creation of a new department offering courses to prepare scientists and engineers to work in the next generation of technology-intensive institutions.

The new department is described as UCL's partner in a growing strategic alliance with the London Business School.

The college seeking academics with a strong research record. But applicants must also have "fresh and radical" ideas about how research and teaching links cutting-edge science and engineering with entrepreneurial businesses to "deliver major societal benefits".

There will be two appointments at lecturer or senior lecturer level and one at lecturer, senior lecturer or reader level.

The seven posts in electronic and electrical engineering are part of a planned development of the department, and appointments will be made from professor to lecturer level depending on the experience of candidates.

Candidates with research experience in communications and information systems and signals are of particular interest.
