An Italian newspaper and television programme and medical expertise in Spanish have helped two universities win awards marking the European Day of Languages on September 26.
Glasgow and Hull universities are among 15 prizewinners chosen by the Centre for Information on Learning and Teaching for "innovative and effective projects" promoting language learning.
At Hull, 12 students aged from 19 to 60 worked as "journalists" to create a web-based newspaper and TV programme. The project, designed by Marina Mozzon-McPherson of Hull's language institute, aimed to teach the students grammar, literary style and communication.
The university now plans to open the web-based paper, Il Faro d'Italia (The Lighthouse of Italy) , to students of Italian worldwide.
Glasgow University's language centre has devised intensive language courses as part of the university's medical degree. The degree was revamped seven years ago, allowing students to choose special study modules.
About 50 students a year, almost half of the year group, have opted for language courses, with Spanish the most popular, followed by French.
