A visit by the Queen to Essex University was disrupted when six anti-monarchy protesters were ejected from a ceremony to celebrate the university's 40th anniversary. The Queen did not respond to the outburst, although it interrupted a speech by the vice-chancellor, Ivor Crewe.

Pre-school education leads to better exams results
Pre-school educated children do best in national tests of reading, writing and maths at the age of seven, a study by education researchers has found. But children whose experience of education begins as young as two are also more likely to develop antisocial behaviour, research from Oxford, London and Nottingham universities concludes.
