Time to tackle London's challenges, mayor says

London mayor Ken Livingstone has called on the capital's universities and colleges to address the city's challenges. He told a conference yesterday that by 2020, London would be home to 700,000 more people and would need 130 extra schools but that London could not expand physically.

The conference also launched GLA Economics, a unit that will track London's economy. Higher education contributes £2.6 billion a year to the capital.
