One secret at the Open University is that the phrase "unable to attend summer school", when it appears in a student's records, in fact means "detained at Her Majesty's pleasure". But this code could become redundant because of the actions of an old alumni. Richard Tilt, alumnus to be proud of number 64, has a diploma from the Open University as well as a BA from Nottingham.

He was famously releasing prisoners last week, in his capacity as director general of the prison service, because they appeared to have been behind bars for too long. But the timing is lax - Open University summer schools finish at the end of this week.
