This year's winners of the European IST Prize for most Innovative Information Society Technology announced at Milan IST 2003 Conference

At IST 2003 Conference in Milan, the three Grand Prize-winners of the European Information Society Prize were announced. The winners were presented with the Grand IST Trophy for 2003 by Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for the Information Society, Dr. Lucio Stanca, Italian Minister for Innovation and Technologies and Pasquale Pistorio, President and CEO of STMicroelectronics and Chairman of the IST Prize executive jury.

The European IST Prize is awarded for innovative products representing the best of European innovation in Information Society Technologies. It is organised by "Euro-CASE" with the support and sponsorship of the IST Programme of the European Commission.

Each of the three projects receives a prize of 200,000 Euro. This prize, together with the very considerable investor interest generated by the prize, has repeatedly been shown to constitute an important source of start-up finance for the commercialisation of successful IST prototypes.

The three grand prize winners competed against 420 innovative projects from 28 countries from which twenty prize winners were announced in June. The high quality across the entire range of applications confirms that the European IST Prize plays an important role in the stimulation of innovation in the European IST Industry.

This year's three winners of the Grand Prize are:

  • Picsel Technologies (United Kingdom);

  • InSightec (Israel);

  • CEDES and CSEM (Switzerland).
Picsel Technologies (UK)

Picsel's innovative ePAGE(tm) multi-media content engine is a leading European wireless technology which has already become the content platform of choice for many companies in the global mobile market. ePAGE(tm) is a multimedia content engine that enables any type of file or object to be viewed and manipulated on mobile devices, PDA's, games consoles, set top boxes or in car systems. Picsel Technologies Limited was founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1998, and its founders CEO Imran Khand and Chief Scientist, Majid Anwar have led a number of successful technology companies.

InSightec (Israel)

Insightec's ExAblate 2000(TM) literally burns off tumours in the body more effectively than existing laser techniques. This revolutionary treatment delivers focused ultrasound energy to a precise point within the human body. In a matter of seconds, diseased tissue is superheated and destroyed. Surrounding tissue is almost totally unaffected. This procedure reduces the need for out hospitalisation and also lengthy recovery times.

InSightec was established at the beginning of 1999 as a joint venture between Elbit Medical Imaging (EMI) and (and now employs some 70 people in Israel and the United States.

CEDES and CSEM (Switzerland)

CEDES and CSEM manufacture the ESPROS/TOF 3D cameras for high-performance and mass-market applications: the first commercial miniaturized and cost-effective 3D camera. The 3D image sequences are acquired at video speed and even faster without any moving parts. The availability of low-cost, easy-to-use and eye-safe 3D cameras opens up a large number of applications from safety and security applications to entertainment.

CEDES AG is a privately owned Swiss company in the field of safety and information systems with 170 employees. CSEM SA, the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology, also a private company, employs 0 staff and is principally active in the fields of microtechnology, microelectronics, photonics and systems electronics.
