Daniel Davis's £2,000 first prize for this year's THES/OUP science writing competition is accompanied by the Oxford English Dictionary on CD-Rom.
Second prize went to David Thomas of the University of Wales, Bangor, for 'It Stinks!', a powerful mixture of seaweed, science and poetry. He wins the complete Oxford English Dictionary in 20 volumes.
Third prize was awarded to Michael Carley of the University of Bath for 'Hear My Plane A' Comin',' about aircraft engine noise and what can be done to reduce it. He wins Pounds 200 worth of OUP popular science books.
The judges were John Barrow (Cambridge University), Helena Cronin (LSE), Sir Harold Kroto (Sussex), Jack Meadows (Loughborough), Alan Singleton (OUP) and Martin Ince (THES).
The THES and the OUP intend to run the scheme again next year.
