The Italian Embassy in the United Kingdom has organised three seminars, sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss science in Italy.

The three seminars are as follows:

- Wednesday 5 February 2003 The lecture, 'Ideas and challenges in particle physics, will be delivered by Professor Guido Altarelli who is Professor of Physics at University Roma Tre in Rome and the Theoretical Physics Division, CERN, European Organisation for Nuclear Research, in Geneva.

The seminar will explore the point that the Standard Model is a low-energy approximation of a more complete theory.

- Wednesday 5 March, 2003, 18.00 The lecture 'How to reduce the need for dialysis: early intervention, strategies and targets' will be delivered by Dr Giuseppe Remuzzi, director of Laboratori 'Mario Negri' in Bergamo.

The seminar will discuss End Stage Renal Disease and the data that may help in combating it.

- Wednesday 2 April, 2003, 18.00 The lecture 'Biology one molecule at a time: green fluorescent proteins for molecular biophysics and devices' will be delivered by Professor Fabio Beltaram, director of NEST-INFM (National enterprise for nanoscience and nanotechnology), Laboratorio di Fisica in Pisa.

The seminar will address recent results on the nanoscale design of fluorescent proteins and on the impact of these new molecules on diverse fields like functional proteomics and biomolecular electronics.
