Welcome to the first THES Textbook Guide . The provision of materials for teaching and learning is a subject of great debate in higher education. This new guide will be exclusively devoted to textbooks, especially core texts (though The THES will continue to review textbooks with broader appeal in Books Focus throughout the year).
There will be three Textbook Guides a year. Each will concentrate on particular subjects. This first guide reviews politics, psychology/psychiatry, mathematics, physics, engineering and modern languages textbooks. We hope the mixture will provide something of interest to almost every THES reader.
And we offer more than just book reviews. There will be features too: profiles of successful authors, articles on how to write a successful textbook, comments by teachers and students on what they look for in a textbook, debates about electronic teaching aids such as authors' and publishers' websites, and pieces looking at textbooks from the publisher's point of view.
