Brussels, 09 Dec 2004

Leading European players in the telecoms, consumer electronics and media industry have come together to form a new Technology Platform on networked and electronic media (NEM).

Participants will draw up a strategic research agenda to serve as a common basis for research and development (R&D) with the hope, ultimately, of bringing Europe to the forefront of NEM technologies.

Commitment to this objective by European industry is illustrated by the company names on the NEM participant list: Alcatel; France Telecom; Thomson; the European Broadcasting Union; Intel; Nokia; Philips; Telfónica I+D. Their principal objective is to foster the development and introduction of novel audiovisual and multimedia broadband services and applications in ways that will benefit citizens, business and the European economy.

The group's work will cover a range of media forms, access networks and terminals, and will focus on seamless delivery and interactivity.

The Technology Platform is also intended to have an impact on worldwide regulation and standardisation policies. 'Regulatory policies should be deeply aware of the new challenges faced by the convergence of services and applications using the same technological infrastructures. The traditional borders between fixed and mobile, wired and wireless, satellite and terrestrial are becoming identifiable,' states the NEM vision document.

Members of the platform intend to provide input for the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) for research, and to work with other European and national R&D programmes, such as Eureka.
