Students sit in to stop fees sanction

三月 5, 1999

About 100 students have been occupying a building at Goldsmiths College, London, since last Friday in protest against the university's threat to expel eight students for refusing to pay tuition fees.

The students want the letters of expulsion withdrawn and an agreement from the university not to exclude students because they cannot pay fees. They have asked the university to tell students what financial support is available and to inform the student union should any student be about to receive notice to pay their fees.

A university spokeswoman said two of the eight students had now come to arrangements with the university. She said: "The college has given the few students who have not paid every opportunity to do so, or to indicate the nature of their difficulty. It remains willing to discuss with them possible arrangements for payment."
