Students appeal against jail sentences for taking part in protests against higher fees

Police battled with hundreds of demonstrators in Istanbul last week as a court heard appeals by eight students against jail sentences of up to 18 years for their part in protests against higher fees.

In a surprise decision the court quashed the convictions. The demonstration was initially meant to mark the anniversary of the killing of students by police at a demonstration in the 1970s.
