Over the past few weeks the academic rumour mill has suggested that a woman might take the reins at the Royal Society. Sources said top society figures were being rather indiscreet about how much they wanted Julia Higgins, the vice-president, to take over as president in the autumn. But feminism hasn't triumphed. The RS council has nominated the odds-on favourite, Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees.
