NATURAL ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH COUNCIL
Marine Productivity: physical controls on ecosystem dynamics (Phase 2)
The aim of this thematic programme is to develop coupled modelling and observation systems for the pelagic ecosystem, with emphasis on physical factors affecting zooplankton population dynamics. Research propoals should be submitted as full bids to NERC Awards & Training (MarProd thematic), Polaris House, North Star Avenue, Swindon SN2 1EU. Application forms can be obtained from www.nerc.ac.uk /awards with eligibility information included in the research grants booklet, available from that site. Most Phase 2 proposals will be closely linked to marine productivity research cruises. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the programme's science coordinator (email: p.williamson@uea.ac.uk; tel 01603 593111) to receive further information on cruise plans. UK research groups registering their interests by September 29 will have the opportunity to attend a workshop at Birmingham, Oct 31- Nov 1, 2000 to discuss fieldwork arrangements. However, attendance at the workshop is not a pre-condition for submission of a Phase 2 funding bid. Full proposal deadline: February 26, 2001.

Research Fellowships and Grants
Eligible applicants: experienced researchers, particularly those prevented by routine duties or like cause from undertaking or completing a programme of research. Research grants provide research expenses over and above normal living costs. Study Abroad Fellowships Eligible applicants: candidates must hold an established, full-time post in a UK institution of higher education, museum, art gallery or comparable institution, and have held a post in the UK for at least the last five years. Awards will not normally be made to those under 30 years of age. Applicants may seek: replacement costs to provide cover whilst overseas; travel to and within the overseas country or countries; a stipend to meet the increased expense of living overseas; and essential research costs. Fellowships may be held in any country or countries outside the UK.

BRITISH ACADEMY
Larger Research Grants
Grants are available for pilot projects which require levels of research assistance, data collection and analysis, or other costs that cannot be contained within the academy's small research grants scheme; field study for programmes of field work extending over periods of up to three years; extensions to existing research activity. Grants are available for the direct costs of primary research, including short-term research and secretarial assistance; consumables; travel and maintenance whilst away from home; and, in certain cases, costs of preparing illustrative material and fees for reproduction rights of text or images. Level of award: over Pounds 5,000 up to Pounds 20,000. Period of award: grants are tenable for up to three years. Deadline: October 30. Call for Full Proposals for Priority Networks, Research Centres and Research Groups
The research priorities board has decided that this year there will be a single research priorities competition for centres, groups and priority networks. This will focus on four topic areas that have been selected for the competition. These topics are listed below. Research Grants
Members of staff or retired members of staff: the trust can help members of staff or, on a discretionary basis, retired members of staff of a Scottish university by the provision of small research grants (maximum Pounds 2,000) for personal research, personally conducted.
Graduates of Scottish universities: may also apply for Carnegie research grants for personal research, except where the research relates directly to the work for which they are employed. Those graduates who are studying for a postgraduate degree or diploma can apply only if they hold a Carnegie or Caledonian scholarship or a studentship awarded by a Scottish university or the British Academy, or are self-funded. Those not resident in Scotland can be considered only if their work is of benefit to the Scottish universities. GAIRDNER FOUNDATION
International Awards
An award of C$30,000 payable to individual winners from a diversity of fields for outstanding discoveries or contributions to medical science. A joint award for the same discovery or contribution may be given, usually to no more than two individuals. Awards may be made to residents of any country without nationality restrictions. All necessary travel and living expenses incurred by winners in coming to Toronto to accept their awards and particpate in lectures in other Canadian cities are paid by the foundation. Deadline: October 15.
